THE VILLAGE! (contains spoilers...)

CAUTION! THIS SECTION MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS!! (after my post)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As I walked out of the theater a few minutes ago, after seeing the movie, The Village, I thought to myself, "If only I hadn't been expecting a really scary movie, I might have liked this movie more." So I now give this information to you: There are a few jump out parts and some tense moments, but do not go to this movie expecting to be scared. Don't compare it to the horror of the Sixth Sense or the suspense of Signs. It's more like Unbreakable in the sense that it is trying to tell a simple story with some twists and turns.

This was my least favorite M. Night Shyalaman movie (for now), but that is not to say that it is a bad movie. I've seen quite a few bad movies in my day -- this one has an original plot with a solid story. It may disappoint some, but I'm willing to see it again -- this time without waiting for the hair on the back of my neck to stand up.

Thank you for your time,

-Joel

P.S. I'm open to any and all other opinions/reviews of this film. I just wanted to vent online.

HUGE SPOILER.....

SERIOUSLY, THIS WILL RUIN THE MOVIE IF YOU READ MORE....

i think this movie only works if you go in expecting it's a scary movie. if you knew that it wasn't, i don't think those intensely tense moments would have been there. the scene where he says to ivy that he'll dance at their wedding wouldn't have had that dual feeling of sweetness and "is-something-going-to-happen?".

m night and company marketed this film brilliantly. his patented twist lies in the trailers this time, not in the ending. that's my take.

i liked the acting and i liked the tension a lot. tension is a huge emotion to evoke in an audience, and it worked because everyone in the theater expected a scary movie.

i'm not so sure how plausible the actual story was. i mean all those people believing they were in a different era?

ps, joel, i added "contains spoilers" to your post title... cos i feel people need to expect a scary movie or it will ruin the surprise that it's not what it is. or at least, it would have been a difft experience for me if i saw it knowing that warning.

I don't believe M. Night ever claims to make scary movies. He prides himself on making movies rich in tension, with uncertain circumstances, ambiguity of characters, and crossing of genres. His marketing ploy was perfect, and it WAS a fear-based movie...about honest and complex characters whose lives were defined, (literally bordered), by fear, either fear of the violence in their past, or fear of unknown horrors surrounding them.

I haven't seen this movie yet but I've talked to people about it, especially the fact that it isn't as scary as its hyped up to be. I'm actually more excited to see it now, actually.

I really liked this movie. I thought the acting was really wonderful and I liked that it wasn't what I expected from it at all. I thought the images were really beautiful, and I bought the concept, but I think that all those kids when they find out the truth are going to need some serious therapy...

I liked it but I didn't love it. I was disappointed that it turned out to not be a horror movie 'cause I really like being scared. But I also like plot twists and endings you never expect because, unlike my husband who after every plot-twisty movie says, "I saw that coming," I NEVER see it coming, and therefore I am totally surprised, and that's fun! Maybe I purposely blind myself to possible surprises and twists, maybe I'm just dumb.

And I do buy that they all thought they were in a different era. If none of the younger generation had never been exposed to anything else, how would they know different? What reason would they have to think there was a modern world outsider their borders, and how would they know what "modern" is? Something to think about.

national pride in its citizens
  Reply #7 Posted at Tue Nov 22 01:14:22 2016

Modern sports have a way of uniting communities and injecting a sense of national pride in its citizens. We see a mass allegiance and following in favor of supporting favorite teams and players from both small and local to massive international competitions, like the Olympic games held every two years. Sports not only provide a place for healthy competition but also instigate strong notions of national pride. Dominating a large percentage of our global entertainment industry, it is hard not to question the importance of sport and whether or not it has always been all fun and games. Sports and competition have been around since the beginning of civilization, adapting and interacting with growing cultures in many ways. Mesoamerican ballgames are a prime example of how what we perceive as pure fun and entertainment nowadays was once an important cultural cornerstone in society. The stakes were much higher. The champion would not only garner esteem and fame but also in win wars and be awarded kingdoms. The Mesoamerican ballgames Deone Bucannon Jersey , commonly referred to as the Ollama, were varied in execution and custom depending on the tribe or era, although certain basic principals adjoin them all together. All seemed to have developed and evolved throughout the times, adjusting to meet society's needs. The rules and regulations of actual games are largely unknown. So scholars concede the lack of records means only predictions that lean towards modern games can be made. We assume the ancient games are most likely to resemble racquetball or volleyball when in comparison to modern sports. As with the rules of the game Robert Nkemdiche Jersey , reasons for specific cultural implementations of the sport are highly speculated with few facts actually written in stone. One important aspect of games was the representation of the struggle between day and night; life and the underworld. The Tlachtli (ball court) was a holy place and was considered to hold portals to the underworld. The ball was thought to represent the sun, whereas structural rings that were placed on opposing sides of the court were said to represent the sunrise and the sunset. This is why most of the courts were found in ceremonial sections of the town, much like the temples that were built. Because of the strong ties to Mesoamerican belief systems, many tales and legends that were passed down throughout generations were centered around the Ollama. One of the most famous myths in the religious text Adrian Wilson Jersey , Popol Vuh, speaks of Hunahpu and Xbalanque These twin brothers sought to avenge their family's death. Legend has it their father and uncle were defeated by the Lords of the Underworld during a ball game and lost their lives as a result.
