If you had to pick a team of ten actors from any improv troupe in Utah to represent Utah Who would you Pick and Why?

I actually tried a couple of times to right a response to this and didn't feel right about any of them.

It all comes down to the fact that I play every show with my favorite actors and I'm lucky that way. Occasionally I get to play with new people and I have a great time playing with them as well, and the more I play with them the more I learn about the waya they perform and the more they become my favorites.

It's an impossible question to answer... in fact even Ebby didn't give an answer to his own question.

It's also just opinion and Matt is right that it is probably a drama starter.

I just hope that everyone gets a chance to play with the people they'd like to be on stage with...

But if you can't be with the one you love... love the one you're with...

Heck, I'll start some drama.

If it's to represent Utah Improv, as in a typical cross section of Improv being performed in Utah, then my answer is:

Jesse Parent. I can't think of any other improvisor who has played with as many different troupes and people in Utah as he has, so he probably has a good idea of the flavor of Utah Improv.

Bob Badore. He's one of longest running improvisors in Utah, plus he's taught a good majority of improvisors in Utah, so he's a good representation of what's going on on the Improv stage in Utah.

Eric Jensen. He's one of the ones that has been doing it the longest and as far as I know consecutively as well to large audiences, so he's probably a good representation of what Utah audiences are calling Improv.

Joe Rogan. Doing it a long time; ran a very large troupe of improvisors, and brought different styles in to Utah through classes and training. Many of these styles have formed the core of what a lot of Utah improvisors understand as longform Improv.

Every one of these people have had a large influence on improvisors in Utah. This isn't a complete list, nor is it intended to showcase all of the reasons why any particular person showcases Improv in Utah. Rather; it's a snap shot of some of the reasons of how these particular people have influenced what improv is in Utah.

I could come up with ten, but I've got to get back to work. Maybe I'll complete this list later.

-Jake

p.s.

It's cool if you disagree; this is my list, not yours.

I believe that to be a cop out list. We would all pick those guys. Thats like saying if you were gonna have a team of artists, you would pick Divinci and Rembrant or Vango. Those guys ARE improv in utah. Improv in utah just wouldnt be the same without em. Get to the part where you stir the shit.

I dont know who I would put. I think maybe we all get together and start drinkin. Then the last twenty people who can still walk will wrestle alligators. I will pick my team of ten from those who survive and have the most limbs left. Of course I will not be drinking or wrestling alligators. I will direct the team, not play on it. Cheers!!

P.S. I would never pick Jesse...His tattoes do nothing for me...happy

That's kind of the point, Josh. I chose to see the the task as what crossection of Utah improvisors exemplify Utah Improv, not who's your favorite.

If it was favorite, I'd put Paul Weinberger and Heather Frank on that list.

I want them to have an improv baby that I can kidnap and raise myself. Too bad Heathers gay and Paul's not.

After thinking about it some more, I think I'd have to add Matt Speer to the list. He's performed in most improv venue's in Utah, been seen by a lot of crowds, taught Improv at Weber State University and a lot of High schools, so he's a good example of what Utah improv is.

I have to put a disclaimer on this; I don't know a lot about Comedy Sportz, so I can't quantify how much they influence the Utah Improv scene. Other than that, I think I've either seen or been a part of every other professional improv troupe in Utah and I'd have to say there's a certain sameness to what they do, both longform and shortform.

So who's to say if these people weren't there, others wouldn't have stepped up.

Did these people shape Utah Improv, or did Utah Improv shape them?

dum dum dum....

I put this question up for a reason, and sad to see that I only got one straight answer. Thank you Jake. I love the improv community here. I have played with so many of you. I knew this question could bring up some Drama.I have been in the middle of so much of that drama. I have heard every ones story and bull crap for years of why they hate this troop and why they dislike that player and so on and so forth. I wanted to see if anyone could rise above and give me a straight answer. I have yet to post my answer because I wanted to see what others put first because I had a hard time picking just ten. If I had to pick ten actors I would pick.

Bob Bedore of Quick Wits
Paul Wienberger of Quick Wits
Jesse Parent of Joker and Jesster
Joe Rogan of Joker and Jesster
Eric Jensen of Laughing Stock
Logan Rogan of Laughing Stock
Ben Briton of Laugh Match
Jake Plumbly of Off the Wall
Andrew Noyes of Mission improvable
Aidan Steinblik of Off the Wall

These all actors that I look up to,love and have had the honor of playing with over the years. They are all incredible improvisers. They share the stage well, the are quick on their feet and time and time again they made me laugh.

Im not on your list eb? I hate you! I hope you stay a virgin your whole life! Your dead to me! lol muah ha ha

I would take any ten people who wanted to play. Of course some folks would bring a certain energy to the stage that I would love to have but when was the last time the "top ten" players in utah where even in the same room together. Sure they are all great and wonderful but I would rather have ten guys/girls who know how to play together. Not that "the great ones" couldnt play together. of course they coule they are the "great ones" but if they are so great why havent they cured cancer. Come on guys, stop stroking your ego and find a cure for this lump on my back. Slackers

Crap... Ebb put up a list after I called him out so now I have to do it... But I'm going to list the people who are on the list and then some who are just off of it so it will be a little more than ten... Also, I still don't know enough about the Northern people so forgive me...

First... I always want people who are accepting and will be ready to play whatever comes up. I know that there are a lot of you, but here are the two that I think of most when it comes to this catagory...

Joel Hilton and Zac Zumbrunnen

Others in this catagory are Shawn Zumbrunnen, Jon Hamilton and Ebby. All Five of these guys are like the glue in a scene. You know that they'll keep the scene going and have it make sense.

Next I want people who can take a show that isn't working out and pull the audience in by sheer force of will... and they are...

Andrew Jensen and Russ McBride

When he's on the top of his game Russ Peacock can do this as well. And Peacock is usually on the top of his game. Matt Spear also could do this from time to time.

I always want to have a physical guy who can do almost anything. I've got one big fav for this...

Troy Taylor

Shawn Z is also amazing at this, but I've got to go with the younger Troy... age slows you down (I'm an expert on that). Jason Lindsey is also one I love to work with -- great stage presence.

I love having women play on stage, though you wouldn't know it from the Wits last year or so... but nonetheless I still like the dynamics that they can add to a scene... so my fav female is...

Jenn Weeks (whatever her new name is... I know I'm terrible)

I also loved working with Becca (who's now big timing us in LA. I'd love to see how Jady has grown because she had a lot of promise (A LOT). Laura and Melissa are great actresses, but Jenn, Jady and Becca took a lot more chances in improv.

Next I love to have a musical guy and I'm going with...

Ben Brinton

Mark Probert was one of the best people I ever worked with in terms of music, but Ben just edges him out mostly because I've had more recent experience with Ben. Tom Rich did some good stuff and I loved that Dave Hunsaker learned guitar just to play music games.

Next is guys who can create characters. It's one thing I just don't do a lot of, but I love watching the people who do. My fav is...

Cameron Stewart

A close second is Drew Keddington, but he hit way to hard (I'm still seeing stars!). Anyone who has seen some of Cam's characters know that they can't be touched. Though I've got to admit that no one does a crazy German in a side car like Paul Weinberger. And Cody K. Carlson had some genius moments during Bad Advice.

Next I want Experience and this one is tough because I've worked with so many... But I'm going with...

Jesse Parent

Man that wasa a tough call. I'd love to go with Eric, and I would if I was on stage because in all the years I've been acting I've never had a better chemistry with anyone like I did with Eric, but since I'm not playing... There's also Joe, who has attempted more types of improv than anyone on the planet. Ryan and Austin also receive votes for this.

For the last person I'm picking a wild card. This is the actor who you just never know what they'll give you and it keeps you on your toes... another tough call but I'm going with...

Paul Weinberger

Who doesn't love Paul? But I have also been amazed at the things that Calvin has done on stage and the same with Cody K. (I still laugh from time to time at Cody's Male nurse character).

So there is my top ten with a few others (also receiving votes. I'm sorry for those I didn't mention. I really love playing with everyone. But I had to make some choices and some of you I just haven't seen enough of so far...

There you go Ebb... I hope you're happy.

And in case you're thinking of pointing it out... Yes, there was a lot of Wits on the list. Unfortunately they are the ones I've seen the most over the last little bit.

I also tried to make the list of people who would be balanced and work well together on stage. That's the showman in me...

I did want to bring up one other point and that was that the best person I ever played with in improv was Rob Bogue, but he's not in Utah any more so I didn't put him on the list... but he waas easily the most overall well rounded player... he can do it all.

Also Erik Johansen (I probably misspelled his name) was another great improvisor but, unfortunately, he is no longer with us.

I'm in...

And hey... here's a strange thought that could probably never happen, but what the heck...

What would happen if we actually put together a groupe representing all the troupes and tried to put on an "All Star Show"?

It could go to all the sites that play improv and possibly show people that there is great talent all over the place.

The haradest thing in my opinion would be the feelings hurt by those who aren't on the squad and that could be a huge hurrdle to clear. But it might be fun.

I'm sure I could get a night booked at the Comedy Circuit for it and I think we couuld also look at booking places at the University of Utah, BYU, and Weber State, and possibly a few High Schools.

The end result could actually be that everyone benefits from it... but it's probably a pipe dream.

But I would sure love to emcee something like that...

That could be wonderful!! Even if I'm not on the team. I could be an alternate, cuz what are the odds that you get everybody to every show. Would you base it on auditions or a secret ballot? I don't see why it couldn't happen. We have enough venues around the state, plus places like schools and such. Utah Improv All-stars!! I like it. What can I do to help?

one way we could do it is have the people decide, much like they do for the nba. Have each troop that wants to help set up a vote system that picks two players from that troop. Then they are on team, if the actor so choose to do so. Now some troops may have more then just two actors that deserve to be on it. Thats were this site comes in. We have actors poll. Then the actors vote on five more actors from any troop that they feel deserves to be on the team. This will give you about 15 to 20 names. The team would go to each improv troop venue and play a show there, and maybe set up a few shows at weber, utah, and so on. All the actors would not play at each show but would rotate so that every one on the team would get the chance to play. I put this post up in hopes that this idea could work and I think it would be a great way to bring troops together. I know some people will want to play and not get in, but with a vote system like this how can one complain.

Yikes... a pipe dream that might go somewhere. Could be tough, but whatever I can do to help just let me know.

Might even be fun to have the "All Stars" as a troupe that challanges other troupes. Imagine how the home crowd will go crazy for their troupe and want them to win... and with the crowd behind them they likely would.

Who knows...

Okay so lets get a count of which troupes want to be involved and us that info to decide how many players per troupe are invited to the all stars. Then we can worry about how to decide who they are.

I say we open it to all the troupes in utah. All of em. There is no reason why captain wacey and the midgit pirates should not be included as well as the rest of the "under advertised" troupes. Improv is Improv and I would hate to see this thing being closed to anyone. They know who they would send and if a smaller or "younger" troupe doesnt want to send any reps then so be it but lets not close this to anyone. We all play the same games and we each bring different items to the table.
I think the idea of bob as the emcee is wonderful. We will also need coaching and workshoping if we are going to bring a cross section of utah improv together.
This is a great idea. Lets keep it open to everybody and do our best to raise the stakes.

And I have no problems letting others emcee.

Also, let's make sure we contact Comedy Sportz. They have some great players.

It would be cool to get a sponser or some kind of grant so that the team has some cool shirts or something.

I did not include Joker and Jester because both of them are members of laughing stock. I didn't think of comedy sports was even around still, but if they want to play lets do it. the only reason I said the five troops I did is because they all have set venues to play at. They all have shows that can were the people can vote for their players.

Im not saying that they will not be included. But the way I thought of setting it up is having the five troops have their fans pick two reps, from each of those troops, then after we do that we have an actors pull involving the improv community, Kind of like a coaches pull. Every actor would be up for vote. I feel that if the just managers, and troop heads, and all of that pick the two reps, there will be a lot of pissed off actors, but if the people pick it, and the improv community as a hole, there really is not much one can complain about.I might be wrong, but I also think one problem is having to many actors, a troop of 20 actors is I think the limit. Even that might be to much. I'm open for suggestion on how you think it could be done but I haven't heard any alternet Ideas.
