Rumors

It has recently come to my attention that a rumor is circulating among the improv community that I was responsible for starting a thread a few years back that caused some controversy and animosity among the improv community, and cast aspersions upon "Quick Wits" founder Bob Bedore.

I suppose, on one hand, I should be flattered that some people know who I am. I thought I was known only to the most die hard "Laughing Stock" fans, and even then as the short guy who isn't Cody. but I have to say, I am unhappy that people I don't even know are accusing me of something I did not do.

I had nothing whatsoever to do with the post entitled "The Truth." That unfortunate, and, in my opinion, rather childish post referenced events which took place before I became affiliated with "Laughing Stock" or The Off-Broadway Theatre, and I am not in the habit of slandering anyone, much less people I don't know, relating to incidents of which I was not apart. What would be the point in that? To be blunt: i have a life. I wouldn't waste my time engaging in such a silly, pointless feud. My online time wasting takes much more the from of oddball pranks, not slander and gossip.

I don't know where this idea came from, but there is simply not one iota of truth to it. I'm not even going to pull a Mel Gibson or Tom Cruise and say I was drunk or misquoted. I just flat out didn't do it. Anyone who says otherwise is, at best, misinformed, and at worse, deliberately spreading misinformation. I would like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and assume it is the former.

If anyone who knows where this rumor got started could shed any light on the subject, i would appreciate it if they emailed me at paul@laughingstock.us. I am not guilty of casting aspersions on anyone else's character, and I'd appreciate people giving me the same consideration.

My best to you all,
Paul Gibbs
semi-retired improv comic

I wouldn't have expected you to believe it, anyway, my Satanic brother. I just heard this yesterday, and since it involves a post on this site, I felt this was an appropriate forum to publicly state the truth.

The worst thing I have ever done to Bob Bedore was to call a penalty against him in a 1996 "Qucik Wits" show when, in a "Free Willy" related sketch, he said "Has anyone seen my Willy?" I admit, I laughed, and therefore shouldn't have called a penalty. I apologize for that.cry But that's as far as it goes.

Wow... that was quick. I obviously was talking to Cody and Zac and had mentioned that I was told that it was Paul... and, unfortunately, I don't remember who told me that because it wasa a long time ago.

Paul, I'm sorry that you had to even answer for anything like this. I was told it and there was never any real proof to it, so I left it alone. I've never had a real beef with you about it -- and now really don't since it wasn't even you. It was just something that came up as part of a conversation and, in truth, Cody and Zac instantly said that they didn't think it was you, and I took them at that.

I really don't care who did it. The point is that if I don't want people to bring up stupid things I've done in my past I shouldn't have done them in the first place. Since I did stupid things I have to be man enough to accept that people will bring them up.

So all is good. But I know exactly what you mean by wanting to make sure that people knew it wasn't you and I except it. I been there myself.

Sorry you were a part of a rumor and I will never bring your name up with "The Truth" again.

And I remember the "Free Willy" bit. It's funny that I'm always trying to keep actors in line and I'm easily the one with the most penalties.

It's all good. Thanks, I appreciate the quick and gracious response. That was a very classy thing to do, Bob.

I did speak to Cody. He and Zac wanted to make sure they had been right in saying it wasn't me (after all, i've played some pretty ridiculous online pranks on Cody in the past), since we all felt the post was uncalled for and just not right, and I wanted you to know it wasn't me. No worries about where the idea came from, as long you know it wasn't me. A: I think things that happened in the past are best forgotten, B: I wasn't part of any of that, so it's none of my business.

As for the "Free Willy" bit, that was in the old days, when I was but an audience memeber. Now that I have experienced the pain of a penalty, I would not be so quick to call one again.

Best wishes,
Paul

Paul... thanks. Again, I'm sorry that you were brought into it and, since I'm the one who obviously did the "bringing" with Zac and Cody, I owe you a huge apology. I do so here and will hopefully get a chance to do it in person.

As for penalties... few people realize just how great they are in a show. If you can get one called on you for a fairly "innocent" thing you've got Gold.

It shows some of the audience that you're serious about keeping the show within some sort of boundaries, it shows another part that you aren't afraid to skirt the line, and it gives you a great chance to do some sort of penalty game (that I always loved playing). It also made the crowd feel like they were seeing something very fresh and unrehearsed.

We need to go back to the penalties more... we don't do them as much as we used to.

Actually, Bob, in my mind, whoever told you is the one who "brought it up." And please understand, I wasn't so much taking offense at being accused of anything as wanting you to know I was not slandering you. You don't deserve to have your past constantly thrown in your face, especially by those without the courage to take responsibility for it. I think, and I feel confident I speak for everyone currenmost of us at OBT, that all of that is water under the bridge. Why dwell on the distant past? I see no reason whatsoever for :Laughing Stock" and :quick Wits" not to co-exist in a peaceful, even friendlyy, fashion. And, had I, who was not there for anyone of it, done something like that, it would make me a colossal jackass, and I wouldn't blame you if you hated me for it.

Truth is, I always enjoyed your improv performances (your emcee work has been a great influence on my own public speaking work), you've never done anything to to me, and I didn't want you to think of me as an enemy, because that would be all manner of stupid. I'd love to tak to you in person sometime, not necessarily for apologizes, but just to get to know a fellow improv performer who was instrumental in getting interested in the artform. I see you wandering around the Gateway from Ii'll stop and say hi.

I embrace you as my improv brother. Now let's get on with the long and painful process of rebuilding our lives.

Very well stated... and I'm really hoping that the water is all gone under the bridge. It was great this last week talking to Zac and Cody a few times and being able to see Eric for a while at Tom's wedding lunch. I really did get the feeling that things might be a little better and I'm hoping to actually make my waya back tot he OBT stage again. Hearing from some of the people has given me hope that it can happen.

I still feel guilty that I obviously didn't push your name aside when I was told it a year or so ago and I'll be more careful about things like that in the future... and that's the Truth.

And if you ever want to come and do a Quick Wits show just let me know. I always love having new people on stage with us. If not be sure to grab me next time at the Gateway, or where ever you see me. Or you can always come and catch a Wits show as my guest.

Take Care...

Bob

Thanks for you generous offer . . . and your ability to get past the numerous typos in my last post. Please, no more talk of guilt. It's all good.

As for performing with "Quick Wits", it sounds like fun, but, truth is, I rarely have time even to perform with my "Laughing Stock" buddies these days. I'm concentrating my time on moving forward as a filmmaker, my real passion, and that currently takes so much of my time that I'm on an improv hiatus.

I may take you up on it in the future, though. At least to view a show. Is Paul Weinberger still playing with you guys? He's great.

Film!

We really should talk then... Film is where Quick Wits is really headed these days. We still have a great time doing shows, but we spend most of our time talking about the stuff we want to shoot.

Luckily I get to do it all the time as part of my job, but this summer we want to shoot an actual feature length thing. We're just trying to decide on the right story to shoot.

We will certainly need all the help we can get on this and you can bet we'll post stuff about it here on this site. So keep posted...

And that goes for the rest of you as well...

Bob

Jess is a great fluffer....but afterwards, his sobbing and shame-spiraling can really mess up the studio silence.

At this point, I'm about halfway through shooting my second feature film, and am likely to be shooting my third this summer. So, again, it looks like I'll be quite busy, but I'd love to hear what you're planning.

Congrats on getting things done! We've been doing a lot of short work (and my work means a lot more shorts) but it is our hope to shoot a feature lenth thing this summer and see where it goes -- but probably mostly for hte experience on this one.

We're kicking around some script ideas and I'll be writing it out in the next month or so.

If you find you need some actors let us know... we all love the experience.
