Click here for deep, but interesting stuff! AND F'ING DIFFERENT!
  Started at Wed Sep 24 16:46:11 2003
Hello everyone. There seems to be a lot of ďblah blah blahĒ on this site, so I thought Iíd share something interesting and personal this time.

I think Iím all theorized out. Everyone seems to have ideas, mantras, rules and speculations on how improv is to be performed. And now we have these short form VS. long form theories. Iím tired. I have all of these theories as well and Jesse has been pestering me for articles ever since this site was started but I have refused just about every opportunity. I know what works for me and I am pretty sure it wonít work quite as well for everyone else.

Believe it or not I am a very different person during the week then the ďImprov JonĒ on the weekends. I work in a stressful environment dealing with pissed of people who donít like the tickets I give them and constantly trying to stay prepared for wild fires. During the winter I have to deal with snow rescue and ski areas and their snow making demands.

Improv is my break. Itís what I do to relax. I look forward to showing up and hanging out with my friends. Yes, they might be a bit more talented in the entertainment category, but itís basically the same idea. The improv show we perform is really just an extension of how our personalities mingle with each other in real life. I donít care about the art or the rules. I just do it for the fun. I do it for the gratification of making hundreds of people laugh every night. And most of all, I do it for me. I do it to take my mind of the harsh realities of life. Quick Wits is my meditation.

So I apologize for not being as involved or interesting as you may want me to be. I simply donít take improv as seriously as some others do. I see the art and challenge to merely be a coincidence.

Iím not trying to deter others from perusing their improv enlightenment. If thatís what you love, then go for it. But I would be curious to see how many others see their improv performances as something simpler, something less tangible, something thatís just a fun thing to do on the weekends.

i'm pretty sure that an audience really wants the people on stage to enjoy and want to be doing what they're doing.

i think we all do what makes us happy and because it's really fun.

the "it" is just a little different for each person.

I agree with Jon,

By week I am a mild-mannered student/security officer, but on the weekends I get to let loose and act like a moron (and they pay me for it!). But I feel bad sometimes because I see all these people taking improv so seriously and it makes me feel inferior because I don't study and work hard to improve my improv. I just try to pick up new things as I perform.

Improv is not my life, it's just a branch on the things I like to do. It's not who I am. That's why I usually perform only one night a week so I can try to have a social life. (Not that that is very successful). Am I wrong for doing this? Could this be considered half-hearted improv? I put my all into it when I'm on stage, but I don't constantly think about it during the week.

Anyway, I just wanted to vent. Thanks for the opportunity, Jon.

-Joel

P.S. Plus, if you get too involved, that's when the drama begins! shocked

I used to perform 4 shows a week every week. Besides being burned out on improv I found that my wife didn't like me always away.

And I had no social life.

Now that I am able to only play once a week, I have been able to spend more time with my wife, and I have been able to to attempt a social life.

Plus, my improv has been stronger since I perform less and experience more outside of the life of improv that I am able to bring in.

I love improv. It one thing in my life that I feel I can do great. But I don't want to be a one facet person.

I want to learn more about it and try new things. But I now temper that with the knowledge of a bigger worldview.

My two cents.

* The truth us funny.

* Simply put, in comedy, honesty is the best policy.

* The only way to do a comedic scene, is to play it completely straight.

* RESPECT choices made by others.

* There are NO bad ideas.

* Conflict is about as necessary as the mad scientist's daughter in a science firction film. It's an arbitrary convention that need not be respected.

* Accept AND Build.

* He who gives information, is a gift giver. He who asks questions, is a thief.

* HEARING and LISTENING are TWO different things.

* LISTEN and REMEMBER

* Avoid predconceived notions.

* Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans. (not really anything to do with improv)

* Stay in the moment. What is happening NOW, will be the key to discovery.

* Action begins with the disruption of a routine.

* When all the players are involved in its creation, the scene is much more interesting.

* Active choices forward the scene. Passive choices keep it stagnet.

* SHOW the audience, don't tell them.

* Less is more.

* THE BEST IMPROVISORS ALWAYS STRIVE TO OVERCOME THEIR OWN EGOS!!

* Reveal yourself through your character.

These are just a few things I have heard/read that have really helped me, once I hear more, I will post them here.

Good Advice Adam,

BUT WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THE POST AT HANDconfused!?! I mean, isn't that contrasting the point that Jon was originally trying to make?

Just wondering,

Joel

P.S. Adam, you're like a brother to me. You know that!

For a thread that's different, it sure looks like it went the way most of the other threads around here go.

For some reason this eccentric Dr. York liked Terry Donahue, an ex-UCLA coach that never really got the program there going. I remember Terry standing on the sidelines as the Bruins lost with this befuddled look on his face. How a mediocre college performance like Terry's translates into a superior NFL performance remains a mystery to me. As soon as Terry took over everything began to slide. Duh. The profile of nice, smart adidas superstar rouge et blanche , intelligent, clear record, no tattoos was set. Unfortunately the profile was also one of 'loser'.

After a string of duds we picked Mike Nolan as coach whose father Dick was actually the Niners coach in the seventies. Everyone that knew Dick said he was the nicest fellow in the NFL and everyone respected him. He couldn't win football games, but boy was he sure nice. Hello? Any similarities here boys?

Tonight before the game our coach Mike was quoted as saying our team has a problem but no one can seem to put the finger on just what the problem is. Hello? As I scan the halftime stats online I think I have discovered the answer! Eureka! That's because the problem is everywhere...in every category. We just don't stink in certain areas...we stink across the board.

Because rather than pick a dope smoking, dog fighting adidas superstar fleur lotus , ghetto blasting Hip Hopper quarterback that can play, the Niner front office thought it better to pick a clean image guy that would stay away from jail, slimy women and bad boy PR. If not a Mormon maybe playing from a Mormon state. The House of York thought that if a clean image didn't win games at least it was well, a clean image. Or something like that. So we pick Alex Smith who in his 'blossom' third year is on bottom of NFL stats.
